Magnetic island is a little bit of paradise just off of Townsville. Home to an abundance of wildlife, beautiful secluded beaches and plenty of pink topless cars, it’s a must for a BackPacker! Here’s the ultimate guide to your Maggie adventure!
Where do you go from?
Townsville. Ferries run from Townsville to Magnetic island and back roughly every hour between the hours of 05:30am and 11:30pm.
How long does it take to get there?
Only around 20/25 minutes, so no need to panic if you get seasick :).
How long should I stay for?
It is possible to do Magnetic Island in a day, as once you get there you can rent a topless car or a motorbike and cruise around the island at your own pace. However if you want to really enjoy it and take it all in, 2-3 days would probably be best.
Where should I stay?
Base hostel do a super cheap deal which is just $108 for 2 days, 2 nights on the island or $133 for 3 nights. This also includes your return ferry transfer (at anytime you like between 5:30am – 11:30pm), 1 dinner, 1 breakfast, a complimentary drink on arrival and FREE snorkel hire throughout your stay. A lot of travellers say that the Magnetic Island Base hostel is their favourite hostel of them all. Forget your standard hostel, the one on Maggie is based on a Thai style bungalows, has cliff top views and has its own swimming pool! You can use your Base voucher to catch the ferry to and from Magnetic Island at whatever time you fancy between 05:30am – 11:30pm. The Sea Link ferry terminal is located opposite the Greyhound/Premier bus stop, in a nice convenient place for you to just rock up whenever you like. The timetable is below:
Fun things to do on Maggie
There are a lot of topless car and motorbike rental shops on the island, you can rent one whilst you are there and there is no need to pre book this. If you choose not to rent a car or bike, there are also push bikes to rent, or buses which you cruise around the island. Alternatively you can take advantage of the FREE snorkel hire and just walk to the nearest secluded cove.
One of the main attractions of Magnetic Island is the Bungalow Bay koala village, where you can get up close and personal with Koalas, snakes, crocs and lots more. This is a great place for photo opportunities so bring your camera!
There are also many walks that you can do on the island which will take you to beautiful, secluded beaches, just grab a map and follow the trails. Along these trails you are likely to see some tropical birds (there are 186 species on the island), or even some wild koalas. Once you get to the beaches, take a swim in the shallow, warm waters surrounding the island and snorkel the stunning reefs and sealife of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Full Moon Party
Maggie is also home to a legendary Full Moon Party, expect the best electronic DJ’s and Fluro parties. If you want to party in paradise, the 2017 full moon party weekend dates are:
