A RatPackers Guide to Brisbane

Intro to Brisbane․

The city that’s right in the middle of your east coast trip… What have you heard about it? Probably that it’s not as good as Melbourne and Sydney right? I’ve travelled the east coast with RatPack & I’ve been living in Brisbane as a backpacker for the past 6 months and wanna give you the inspo you need to enjoy Brissy city life whilst on your east coast roadie! Here’s why there’s more than meets the eye to this underrated city!

Below: RatPacker Helena Critchley – Taking in those city views…

1. It’s cheaper than Melbourne or Sydney

There’s nothing more we love than saving some dollar >> yewwwww! If you’re planning on staying in Aussie to work & save money to continue your adventures, Brisbane is a good bet as rent is a lot cheaper, although be warned although the rent is cheap the night life is GREAT so you gotta watch out for this… (more on the night life side of things later).

2. It stays hot all winter

We didn’t come to Aussie to be cold! So if you want to feel like it’s summer all year round, Brisbane is the place for you. The temperature in Sydney drops quite low between June > September, and don’t even get us started on the 4 seasons in a day that the winter in Melbourne has to offer! According to the Brisbane locals there’s actually no such thing as a winter here… with an average of 283 days of sunshine a year

3. You will be near some of Australia’s best beaches

Spoiler: there is no actual beach in Brisbane (but do check out Streets Beach at Southbank) Brisbane is located in between the Gold Coast and the Sunny Coast, both of which have some of the most BEAUT beaches in the country. You are also only 2 hours away from the home of RatPack in Byron Bay which is the perfect place to  escape from the city at weekends. Jump on a train or rent a car to explore the areas around the city! Some of our personal faves are:

Gold coast

  • Coolangatta
  • Surfers paradise
  • Tallebudgera creek
  • Burleigh heads

Sunshine coast

  • Noosa main beach/all beaches along national park walk
  • Sunshine beach
  • Mooloolaba
  • Coolum beach

4. The nightlife

You should get by now that RatPackers love a night out and Brissy has it all. From snazzy bars with skyline views {where you’ll probably have to wear shoes!}, to big clubs hosting world renowned djs to small funky bars and pubs, there’s something for all of us which makes for an epic bar crawl. Head to Fortitude Valley {AKA the Valley} where you are certain to have a great night, the bars and clubs are all next to each other and there is always a mix of locals and backpackers here for a good time {remember not a long time!}. Fancy getting a bit posh and pretending your not a backpacker for a night?? The nightlife in the city is glamorous, with classy bars and restaurants on the waterside as well as a huge selection of rooftop bars. #flashpacker ; )

Some of our faves:

  • Eleven rooftop bar
  • The Met
  • Fridays
  • Famous
  • GPO
  • Finn Mccools
  • Alfred & Constance

5. There’s loads to do

Like all cities, there is always something going on! You won’t be short of things to do whilst in Brisbane. Whilst I was living in Brissy I’ve been to 2 music festivals (Splendour in the grass & Listen Out) visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, had a picnic at Mount Coot-tha which has the best views of the city, been to the races, watched the River firework display, been to Brisbane’s famous Oktoberfest, visited the waterfalls at Springbrook national park, and had loads of weekends away to Byron and the Gold Coast.
